Free and Easy!

Right on the edge of the narrow neck of water where Lakes Albert and Alexandrina meet is a beaute little free camp site that is a must do if visiting the area.

Locals jokingly say, that to get there you have to go ‘overseas’ and while the ferry ride across the Narrows takes less than 5 minutes you will feel like you’ve been transported into another realm, Often there are more pelicans being ferried across the way than passengers with their cars and the view up and down the lakes is simply stunning.

When no-one is on the little Narrung jetty the biggest of the local pelicans and cormorants tussle to land ‘the’ post tucked out of the wind and in the sunshine and it’s just a treat to watch!  And the camping spot is nestled amongst all of this quaint activity.

After the sun sets you’ll either be treated to a moon that lights the surface of the lake water or a dark star studded sky, depending on the time of month, of course. Otherwise you might be fortunate enough to see the sunset colour a clouded sky, which means that you might actually see some welcome rain, which will be announced by a cacophony of frogs.

Keep your eyes peeled for turtles, they seem to like to cross the road there just south of the campsite and don’t forget to Ferry back up to the little lighthouse that used to guide steamers and cargo ships into Narrung and then up the Narrows into Meningie with passengers headed to Melbourne.

Spend the day fishing or bird watching and happy snappers will love the views across the lakes from Point Malcolm Lighhouse.
