John Francis Peggotty
Australia’s most unlikely Bushranger. Active in the Coorong during the late 1800’s.
Here, we share some history, some facts ‘n fiction and re-imagine the antics of this colourful character and his ostrich, “Stretch.”
Coorong's Birdman Bushranger
Born in Limerick Ireland in 1864. John, sometimes known as Liam, was born three months premature, and reportedly only grew to the size of a seven year old.
Sweeping Changes
His size made him ideal for the job of a child chimney sweep, or “Climbing Boy” as they were often called. The inside of chimneys not to his liking, he headed off to South Africa, where he reportedly learned to race ostriches.
A Criminal Life Begins
Returning to England, he allegedly began robbing jewelry, (which he enjoyed wearing) by climbing down the chimneys of wealthy households. Caught and jailed for five years, he emmigrated to Australia on his release.
Living Down Under
Arriving in Australia to work on his uncle’s NSW farm, he was soon “asked” to leave, after being caught wearing his aunt’s jewellery. Moving to South Australia, he resumed his criminal activities in Adelaide.
Birds of a Feather
He is alledged to have recruited a gang of boys, to help burgle Adelaide households via their chimneys. For reasons unknown, he moved to the Coorong region in 1898, tamed a wild ostrich and began his bushranging lifestyle.
"Flying High"
Chalking up at least twelve hold ups and two murders, Peggotty soon became the scourge of the Coorong. Easily outrunning police horses on his faithful feathered friend.
