The Coorong is a really unique place located in the State of South Australia, in the land down under.
Down Under
Australia is known as the land down under because it is in the Southern Hemisphere.
The area known as the Coorong is special because it is where fresh river water from Australia’s longest river flows out into the Southern Ocean.
What is Australia’s longest River?
The Murray River in Australia is more than 2 500Km’s long. It begins in the Southern Alps of New South Wales and Victoria and flows into South Australia, where it finally empties out into the Great Australian Bight.
If you drive along a main road in your car with your parents or friends really fast, at 100 km’s per hour, how many hours would you have to keep driving for, to get to the end of this river?
Yep, more than 25 hours, that’s more than 1 whole day! That’s a lot of driving.
The Coorong is actually called a National Treasure, because of all the different types of birds, fish and animals that either visit or live in the area. Thousands of pelicans live in the Coorong.

Pelicans from the Coorong as well as other parts of the world will fly to Jack’s Point in the Coorong, where they will breed and raise their young. The breeding ground is called a rookery, and it is ideal because it is an area with lots of remote salty lagoons that are all connected, so there are plenty of fish but very few predators.

The town of Meningie is located on the shore of the smaller lake. It is a popular place to visit for fishing and boating. Lots of people catch Coorong Mullet when they go fishing in the Coorong.
